WHY TRY TO LEARN GOLF ON A DRIVING RANGE WHEN THE GAME IS PLAYED ON A GOLF COURSE?
Repetition under actual playing conditions is the key to improvement.
Too many golfers think that they will improve their golf by going to the golf driving range. Golf Digest says that nothing could be further from the truth. While it is fun to hit balls at the range, it is of minor help in improving your game.
Think about it! The driving range is 400% wider than most fairways. There is no pressure because there are no hazards. You are hitting off of either a rubber or grass type mat. A golf driving range will improve your driving about as much as miniature golf will improve your putting. You can play 9 holes at Laurel Run for $7.00 compared to a %5.00 bucket of balls the you use in 15 minutes. Comparison? There is no comparison.
If you want to improve your game, it has to be done on a golf course. I would recomment Laurel Run.
THE TWO HACKERS THAT BLAMED THE GREENS FOR THEIR HIGH SCORES.
Two ladies were playing golf at Laurel Run sometime in August of 2005. As I watched them hit 4 or 5 shots off of the first tee, I wondered if they would finish before dark. I saw them putt 4 or five times on the 4th hole where I was working at the time. I thought they were nice enough until they started complaining about the greens. Granted, the greens could have been better and I was working on them. They blamed the bad greens for their bad golf. If bad greens made them bad golfers, then they should shoot par on Oakmont or Pebble Beach, I thought to myself. I estimated that both of these women score 125 or more on a regular golf course. I have not seen these ladies since 2005, so I guess they ended up at Oakmont or Pebble Beach. Good luck, ladies! Our greens have improved, so come on back where you can break 100. Moral of the story: Course conditioning attributes more to pleasure than good golf.
THREE GOLF PRETENDERS THAT VANDALIZED THE GREENS.
On a very hot July afternoon in 2008, three teen age guys showed up allegedly to play golf. They wanted to rent three gas golf cars. I tried to talk them into renting maybe two and save $13.00. They wanted three. I asked if they were students in order to give them a discount. They looked at each other for an answer and no one was able to answer that question. It's not like I asked them to analyze a science question. Nevertheless, I explained that I would have to charge them the adult price. They could not answer the student question and did not mind paying the adult prices.
Away they went on the three gas golf cars. Soon afterwards, a golfer came off the golf course and notified me that these three boys were playing field hockey with regular hockey sticks on the greens and Polo on the fairways. They were using the gas golf cars as one would use a horse. I doubt that they ever heard of Polo, but that is what they seemed to be doing.
As I was going out to chase them off the course, they came in and quickly left the parking lot. Several greens were damaged but repairable. I have their license number, but it's not worth the aggravation to call the state police. They have better things to do.
We do not know where they will play next, but we do know that they will never ever play at Laurel Run again.
THE FOUR THIEVES.
They pulled up in a late model car. They rented two golf carts and asked if they could pay when they finished. I always agree to that because no one has ever left without paying, except for these crummy people. They scribbled over their names on the back nine score card to avoid detection, however, they were too stupid to cross out their names on the front nine of the card. I am quite anxious to catch up to TIA, MARC, FRED AND BOB. To add insult to injury, they wrote filthy remarks on their card and placed it in with the other score cards so others could see it. They mispelled just about every other word, so literacy is not one of their assets. As our nuns used to say, "Good riddance to bad rubbish."
WE GO TO THE SAME COLLEGE BUT WE DON'T KNOW WHERE!
Three young guys and a girl came into the golf shop and inquired about the golf rates. They were given the rates, including senior citizen, student and adult rates. The student rates are the lowest and they said that they were students at the same University. I asked which University and each one gave a different school: University of Pittsburgh, State College near Harrisburg and a Community College were the ones given. I kind of laughed and gave them the student discounts regardless of their nonstudent category. I them advised them that it is not worth the few dollars to lie about college and cheaper to pay the adult prices than enroll in college in order to get the student price.
They were embarassed which is a good sign. Since that time, they have returned to play at Laurel Run and always insist on paying the adult price, because they are not students.
The Tin Can Open group started playing at Laurel Run long before I took over. Many owners would love to have this group of over 60 golfers play at their golf course, but they continue to play at Laurel Run because we treat them with respect and dignity. They, in turn, keep the course clean and even provide drinks to golfers from other groups. Yeah, maybe they remove their shirts but I always check with female golfers to see if they are offended and the answer is always no. If they were offended, we would ask that they put their shirts on.
Golf can be a "snobby" game, but never at Laurel Run. I have played at Pebble Beach, Oakmont, Squires and other fine courses where the dress code is understandbly strictly enforced. Laurel Run is a public course that caters to campers, vacationers, hunters, locals and the average, respectable working person. We just ask that you keep your pants and shoes on and respect everyone on the golf course.
